Contextual Fit

In this undertaking, our objective is to extend the renowned Smith House, envisioned by architect Richard Meier in 1965. The addition is mandated to demonstrate a meticulous examination and integration of the existing systems and design motifs, ensuring the preservation of the original design's integrity. Additionally, we are tasked with incorporating conceptual analogies for expansion, while adhering to a specified meta-idea and narrative that addresses the evolving needs of the homeowners. This endeavor necessitates the introduction of novel systems or patterns that were absent in the original residence.

Narrative

The Smith family has recently asked for an addition to their house. The family of 3 want to start getting into the fitness industry to be in better shape as a family. The family reaches out and requests they want to extend a portion of their house and create an inside gym area for him and his child to be motivated to workout and no excuses needed. The family expresses that a house gym will provide that motivation. They have also asked to incorporate a rooftop kitchen sitting area with a gym ledge.

Preliminary Designs

I developed three initial design concepts by strategically planning the required elements and circulation routes. Through careful observation of how each design harmonized with the existing circulation and evaluating their respective potentials, I ultimately opted for the third design. This decision was driven by its superior alignment with the established flow and its demonstrated potential for effective implementation.
